Your IPL Timeline: How to Plan 3–4 Sessions Before Christmas

The holidays are closer than they feel. Between the parties, the family photos and the "wait, is it December already?" moment, most of us want our skin looking its best, and we want it without a recovery plan that wrecks the calendar.

That's where IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) comes in. It's one of the most popular ways to fade sun spots, calm redness and even out tone, with little to no downtime. But there's one thing that surprises people: IPL works in a series, not a single visit. The good news? If you start in early November, you're right on time.

Here's how to map it out.

Why IPL Takes More Than One Session

IPL uses broad-spectrum light that's absorbed by pigment (like sun spots and freckles) and by the tiny blood vessels behind redness. Your body then clears away that targeted pigment and congestion over the following days and weeks.

Each session treats what's ready to come up. The next one catches what was hiding underneath. That's why we typically recommend 3 to 4 treatments, spaced about 3 to 4 weeks apart, with results building each time.

Why Fall Is the Perfect Time to Start

IPL makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so the cooler months are the safest and smartest window. Less UV means better healing and better results. You've also got the summer's worth of sun damage showing right now, so there's plenty to treat.

A Real-Life Timeline

Here's an example of what a series can look like if you start at the beginning of November:

When

What happens

Week 0 (early Nov)

Consultation + Session 1. We assess your skin, review your goals and treat.

Week 3–4 (late Nov)

Session 2. You'll likely notice spots darkening and flaking off, then tone starting to even out.

Week 6–8 (mid-Dec)

Session 3. Visible brightening, and redness and pigment keep fading.

Early–mid January

Session 4, if recommended, to refine and finish the series.

So can you fit 3–4 treatments in before Christmas? Starting in early November, you can usually get 2 to 3 sessions in before the holidays, and you'll already be seeing a difference in time for the parties. Your final session lands just after the new year. Every skin is different, so your specialist will tailor the spacing to you.

What to Expect After a Session

  • Right after: mild pinkness, similar to a light flush. It typically settles within hours.

  • Days 1–10: sun spots can look darker before they lift, then flake or fade away. This is the treatment working. Please don't pick.

  • Makeup: most people can go back to their normal routine quickly, which makes IPL very holiday-friendly.

How to Get the Best Results

  1. Wear SPF daily, even in a Maple Ridge winter. Cloud cover still lets UV through.

  2. Avoid tanning or sunburn before and between treatments.

  3. Pause retinols and strong exfoliants in the days around your appointment, as advised by your specialist.

  4. Stay consistent. Skipping sessions or stretching them too far apart slows your results.

Is IPL Right for You?

IPL is best for sun damage, pigmentation, redness and uneven tone. It isn't ideal for everyone. Your consultation will cover things like your skin tone, any recent tan or sunburn, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and active breakouts or cold sores. If IPL isn't the best fit, we'll point you to a treatment that is. Deeper concerns like texture, scarring and fine lines may be better served by something like Nouvaderm.

Make a Plan, Not a Panic

The best time to start your series is before your calendar fills up. Our November IPL special is buy 3, get 1 free, a great way to commit to the full series and get the most out of it.
